The 30 Best Gifts for 3-Year-Olds
Now that they’ll be the first to tell you they’re big kids, the best gifts for 3-year-olds need a little more substance—and a lot more personality—than the usual toddler fare. You’ve got a preschooler on your hands, and with age comes wisdom and increasingly strong opinions. (There’s a reason they’re lovingly referred to as “threenagers,” right?)
As with buying a gift for everyone else on your list, the best place to start is with the 3-year-old’s current interests and stage in life. Is the kiddo into arts and crafts, or would they rather learn more about animals? Do they need something that’ll keep them actively engaged, or are Mom and Dad in need of a little help for wind-down time? Despite their kid being one in 8 million, the answer may be yes to all of the above. So to help you narrow down the very best gifts for 3-year-olds, we talked to pediatrician Charlotte McKnight, MD, at Pediatric Associates of Richmond in Virginia.
Similar to her advice in our best gifts for 2-year-olds guide, she says it’s best to keep gifts simple and skip the electronics for this age. But before we get into the presents themselves, we break down a few gifting categories for 3-year-olds ahead. (BTW, we also rounded up the best gifts for new moms in case you want to spoil a future mama, plus the best baby gifts and presents for 1-year-olds if you’ve got a few more littles on your list.)
Educational and Developmental Gifts
“At three, they really hit this developmental catapult,” Dr. McKnight tells Glamour. “It’s a phase that parents are very proud of.” She says there are all kinds of milestones: understanding how to take turns, being a friend, counting, and identifying letters to name a few.
“Books are great at any age,” says Dr. McKnight. “But with 3-year-olds’ increased attention spans and a better understanding of the world around them, books are an especially fantastic idea for them.” She also recommends anything that can help explain potentially stressful situations to kids, like going to the doctor or introducing a new sibling.
Imaginative Play Gifts
What do you buy a toddler that has everything? Something that’ll spark their imagination. “Three-year-olds adore the attention and showing off new skills, so there are a lot of ‘look at me’ moments,” says Dr. McKnight. She says this makes dress-up clothes a super-fun gift. “At this point they are not only painfully independent, but they have also started to master dressing. Pair that with their big imaginations, and you have a gift that you may see them wearing for days on end!”
Active Toy Gifts
Does it feel as if their kid is the Energizer bunny? Could you swear they brew themselves 10 K-cups every morning? A plaything for an active child will be a welcome gift for the parents as it may just keep their beloved espresso bean from bouncing off the walls. Just think about whether you want to give something for the outdoors or for indoor play, as where the parents live (and how much storage space they have) should be taken into account. This is also the arena for going big: “This is the age that many children begin to figure out pedaling a tricycle, so if you wanted to splurge on a bigger gift that could be an option,” says Dr. McKnight.
Arts, Crafts, and Music Toy Gifts
Toys that help little ones get creative are great for all kids since the parents can whip them out on a rainy Saturday or a sick day. Whatever you gift, try to shop for things that can still be easily wielded and manipulated by little hands. And keep an eye on the ingredients and minimum-age requirements on the packaging; Dr. McKnight reminds us that despite big advances, three-year-olds are still prone to putting small objects in their mouth, so they shouldn’t be allowed anything potentially toxic in case it’s consumed, and choking-hazard cautions are still in force.
