One properly delicious bob haircut that should be on your radar before your next hair appointment? The old money bob.

This haircut plays into the old money aesthetic, which has already amassed more than 12.5 billion views on trendsetting social media platform TikTok. The movement celebrates the preppy and covertly luxurious style of dynasty babies, like Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf, who favor traditional pieces (think pea coats, pinafore skirts, white shirts, tweed jackets, loafers and a sweater slung over their shoulders) from heritage brands like Christian Dior, Hermès, and Ralph Lauren, over modern trends. It differs from the quiet luxury aesthetic in that it’s not just subtly chic; it also brings in a vintage vibe to the look.

It’s no surprise that the aesthetic has tapped into hair trends, seeing as bob haircuts were all over the Golden Globes red carpet. Golden Globe nominees Greta Lee and Cailee Spaeny were actually both wearing stylish takes on the look! We don’t blame them, either: The old money bob is the best of both worlds, celebrating a classic shape but with extra polish and a modern spin. You simply can’t go wrong.

What is the old money bob?

The old money bob takes things back to basics and to the original classic shape; however, extra attention is paid to the condition (extra glossy) the shape (immaculately blunt) and the oomph (way more bounce). “The old money bob is a timeless and effortless cut but with a modern edge,” explains top London hair stylist, Suzi Angelina (@hair.by.suzi), who gave us one of our favorite renditions of the style.

“It’s a short cut, voluminous, above shoulder, and full of body,” Angelina continues. “It has fullness throughout, with shaping around the front only for that extra classy bounce. It has proven to be a favorite and looks to be trending throughout 2024.”

How to get the old money bob

As for what to ask for at the salon? “This cut is all about fullness and body. The volume at the root gives an expensive feel, whilst the blunter ends offer a more sophisticated twist,” Angelina says of the old money bob.

“It’s important to keep a full perimeter when cutting the hair, focusing any soft shaping just around the face. Doing so helps the hair to appear thicker throughout the ends, whilst still having movement around the face for that eye-catching bounce and body,” she says of how to properly perform the haircut.

“This is the perfect reference to show that long hair isn’t always the best option for you when it’s dry and wispy,” Angelina shared on her Instagram post of the cut, and added: “I cut the bob just below chin length, so that when it is styled it frames around her face. I cut a long bang in around the face that sits just below her cheekbones and when this is styled, it bounces up and opens up her cheek bone area to show off her beautiful features. If you have a rounder face than Lyd [Suzi’s model], like myself, I recommend cutting your bangs just below the chin. If your bangs are cut too short they open up the jaw area which can in fact make your face appear wider.”

Translation? If you’re in your old money era, the corresponding bob is too chic to miss. Ahead, see four more ways to wear the old money bob.
